The tale of Cypher’s love affair with music, and the midwest’s subsequent romance with him, is one of the critical veins in the body of dance music for his local scene. He is every dancer’s secret discovery; a reluctant night out that unexpectedly turned magic. His success came not behind a major label release, or a world tour, or a radio hit remix: It happened when enough people had the private Cypher experience for themselves in an old dusty warehouse or abandoned skating rink during the wee hours of the morning.

This is evident by the mass of “Cypher Supporters” you will find scattered all over the Midwest. In dance music circles, Cypher’s name conjures fond memories of unforgettable gigs at destinations throughout the Midwest. What punctuates Cypher’s skills as a DJ is his capacity to not only incorporate diverse genres and styles, but to transcend them by infusing his music with pure emotion. Cypher’s talent is matched only by his passion, which has seen him become one of the true DJ’s that stay true to the art.

If you ask him, it was a question of right time, right place. Talented yes; opportunistic, definitely — and just a little bit lucky.

Humble beginnings is what you will find if you dig behind the scenes in the early parts of his career. Starting his own mobile DJ service as a freshman in High school in 1989 was the start of this musical journey that brings him to where he is today. It wasn’t until he moved to Chicago in the late 90′s that he would do dive into the world of electronic music as a performer. Frequenting the Crobar nightclub in downtown Chicago , Scott knew that this was what he was missing. “The energy was unmatched and the people were passionate about the music like nothing I had ever seen before.” He took the hard driving club sounds and put his own spin on things when he moved back to St. Louis in 1998.

Known in the late 90′s for his hard bangin UK Acid House sets in the underground scene, Scott now pushes the boundaries of the best in progressive techno and house music. His style is limitless with an enormous bound of continuous energy that can’t be matched. It’s Dance Music, with a lot of different twists. Depending on the situation at hand, his sets range from ethereal feeling house , to dark driving poppy/proggy techno. Nothings ever set or the same when he’s on the decks, the music is always freshly delivered.

Moving into the studio doing his own production, is now what drives Cypher once again to recreate those memorable times from his past. “There would be nothing like seeing another DJ drop one of my original tracks that would drive the dance-floor into a frenzy! This circle of life and music is what it’s all about – Evolving as a person as well as a performer.” Cypher remains incredibly humble and grateful to be in pursuit of his passion.

Jeff Hopkins from St. Louis, Missouri was introduced to the electronic music scene in 1990 when he became a regular at 1227, a club which was located on Washington Ave. in St. Louis, MO. His passion for electronic music continued to grow through the nineties and into the millennium. In 2000 he started throwing parties in his home and on the 23rd floor of the Laclede Gas building in downtown St. Louis. These were historic parties that club goers will never forget. Positive reinforcement and a magnetic influence was all it took for Jeff to purchase his first DJ equipment in 2001. It was DJ’ing where Jeff found his true passion and began expressing himself in a profound way. He was able to learn the basics by watching local and national DJ’s work their magic in the booth. Many local and national DJ’s introduced Jeff to deep, dark house, the roots of Jeff’s ever growing style. Within a year, Jeff earned residencies at two of St. Louis’ top clubs. Velocity Promotional Group picked up Jeff in 2002 and then he went on to work with La La Land Entertainment before venturing out on his own in 2004.
To date DJ Jeff Hopkins has had many successful residencies including The Living Room, Velvet, The Havanah Lounge, Novaks, Faces, Martini Room, Rue 13, The Drunken Fish, Sub Zero, Dantes, Kyo, Mollys, Ten14, Xes, Level13, Throttle, The OZ as well as hundreds of local and out of state parties. In 2004 Jeff was the featured DJ on “The Electric X”, a live radio show on 94x in Memphis, TN. In 2005 Jeff was honored with an invitation to open for Oscar G at Velvet on the club’s last open night after a highly successful 10 year run. Jeff Hopkins style has often been compared to DJ’s Steve Lawler, D:Fuse, Thickdick, and Oscar G, who have all been influential in Jeff’s music career. His unique style of dirty filthy , electro, tribal, progressive & Tech house continues to evolve. His live energetic sets always captivate the crowds no matter where he is playing!!

John “DJ Keeno” Huang a.k.a. kidkeeno is no child when it comes to manning the decks. Having started as roadie for his friend DJ Tweety in high school, Keeno has since risen to become one of the most popular open-format DJs in the St. Louis area. As both a dancer and a DJ, Keeno has the skills, technique and musical intuition to make the crowd go crazy. Spinning only the best in hip-hop, electro/house, club/top 40, as well as funk & soul, DJ Keeno is your go-to-guy for one insane dance party. He has spun at many of STL’s top nightlife spots including The Pepper Lounge, RUE13, Club 15teen, Sugar & Solace, The OZ Nightclub, Jade Lounge, Atomic Cowboy, LURE, plus many more and has held residencies at Dante’s/Bar AB, Mandarin Lounge and 609 Lounge. Aside from nightlife, Keeno has opened for and shared stages with international acts such as Jay Sean, CULTURESHOCK, Shwayze, BEARBOT, Major Lazer and Wale. Recently, he was a finalist in the Sunday Night Remix, an open-format midwest DJ competition in which he placed in the top 3 out of 32 DJs. He also is the owner of JLS Audio Services, a student-run mobile DJ service that provides audio entertainment for campus events, house parties and formal dances.

With that being stated It’s hard not to cheer on his new found success with his recent chart-topping tracks with Rihanna, and Kelis. From the time that she purchased her first pair of turntables in 2001, DJ Kid Delicious has been steadily rising to the top of club life. Her Delicious fusion of Tribal Beats and Dirty Techy Basslines has earned her residencies at many clubs and lounges throughout the United States.

Kid has experience playing in a wide variety of venues, including a two year residency at the world famous “Velvet” in St. Louis, MO. Her ability to ignite a dance floor has earned her the opportunity to play at events with artists such as Fergie, Nigel Richards, Oscar G, DJ Irene, Freaky Flow, Dave Aude, Seb Fontaine and Crystal Method. She also had the opportunity to perform amongst the world’s top DJs at the annual Ultra Music Festival in Miami, Florida.

Velocity Promote Group voted Kid “Best All Around DJ” and “Best Promoter” in 2004. Also in 2004, she won “The Dance Music Master Mix Off”, a local DJ competition. In the beginning of 2005 she won another DJ competition sponsored by a St. Louis newspaper called The Riverfront Times. In 2006 Kid was voted “Best Club DJ” by the City of St. Louis in The Riverfront Times annual reader’s poll, making her the first female DJ ever to win that award.

In 2007 Kid relocated to Los Angeles, California where she played at venues throughout the West Coast area. In 2008 she joined World Wide Exclusive Records, a Romanian record label which released her mix, “California Tech House”, currently available on Beatport.

Recently, Kid relocated to Chicago where she is currently focusing on production. Stay tuned for more Delicious sounds coming soon!

How do you describe the genre bending sound of British rapper, singer-songwriter, record producer M.I.A.? Stoner hip hop? Psychedelic beat? Perhaps in the generic sense simply electronica. However you try to categorize it M.I.A. has captured the sound of now and while that may seem a bit familiar to some (remember De La Soul?) this is definitely a new formulation. Well some of you might be wondering why it’s taken so long for Atlanta’s Treasure Fingers to find his way into this blog. While there is no excuse, we hope that today’s Song of the Day will help make up for our glaring omission. The track “Au Revue” is from the recently released “Crusaders EP”, which is a collaboration with No Brainer Records head Malente and is a two song disco / house tour de force. Now by highlighting “Au Revue” we’re not trying to say that the title track (and mildly amusing Official Video linked below ) “Crusaders” is filler, oh no. Chicago House Music DJ Steve Smooth is back again in the Song of the Day with his new track “The Maya”. With this release (on Ultra Records) Steve teams up with fellow Chicago DJ Kalendr and Beatport CEO, DJ Jonas Tempel. 2012 is shaping up to be the year of the mega collaboration and this track is another great example of that. Dirty South, Thomas Gold, and Kate Elsworth have teamed up again to bring us “Eyes Wide Open”. It’s the trio’s second combined effort since last year’s hit track “Alive”. Originally, Elsworth’s vocals were meant to be added to a bootleg that Dirty South & Thomas Gold were working on. However, the two producers fell so in love with the track that they decided to forgo the bootleg and make a song around Elsworth’s vocals.
