Christopher Lawrence is easily on of the world’s most recognizable Trance music DJ/Producers and easily represents the US trance scene around the world. Get to know Lawrence and see him in action at this year’s WMC in this clip.

Donald Glaude is a house music pioneer producing his own music and releasing tracks strictly for other DJS. While Donald is usually a west coast regular his rare trip to the midwest should not be missed. Check out snip[pet of a massive Donald set at WMC 2009.

It was billed as “The Epicenter of St. Louis Club Culture” and for nearly a decade (1996 – 2005) it lived up to that slogan. Velvet was one of the few long term success stories on Washington Avenue out living all but Rue 13 (it’s sister establishment). In fact I will go as far as to say that Washington Ave has never been quite the same since Velvet closed it’s doors in 2005. It seems a less exciting place to go on a weekend, more pedestrian and suburban than urban. Gone are some of the wildness that used to happen in and around the clubs of the late 90’s. That’s not all bad because there were a few clubs of that era that had earn (deservedly) a terrible reputation.

I remember Velvet fondly as I went there so many weekend nights dancing, drinking, and having a great time. Velvet wasn’t actually one big club but it became two distinct areas for entertainment. The front room was initially a big sort of pass through area that initially made you feel kind of like waiting in line for a roller coaster at Six Flags. It wasn’t too long before the owners/managers decided to make it it’s own space that would often have a very different vibe. Now the Main Room… That’s where all the magic happened. There was a huge dance floor with lots of lights and boxes for people to dance on. The sound was also amazing with a LOT of bass especially when it was pushed. There were other areas of the club too like VIP and the “back” darkly lit area but i can’t discuss the shenanigans that happened in those areas

Although the club has been surpassed by newer and sometimes larger venues there will always be something special about Velvet. I am obviously no alone because the reunion party this weekend is set to be packed! If you went to the club back in the day be sure not to miss this event! For more information click HERE! I suppose it’s easy to be cynical of hearing the words Playmate and DJ strung together in a sentence to describe a performer buy when it comes to Tamara Sky you have to toss out the status quo. This lovely lady has some chops and her resume of past and future gigs back her up. She has played New York Fashion Week, clubs all over Ibiza, has played for Donald Trump’s Birthday party, AND is going to play in the Maker’s Mark Lounge at the upcoming Kentucky Derby. She has also shared the stage with a number of megastar DJs including Kaskade, Paul Van Dyk, Sander Kleineberg, and even The Crystal Method. If you can be sure to get to her set Saturday night (April 3rd) at Lure, you might be witnessing the making of a megastar.

OK St. Louis just in case there is anyone out there that doesn’t know that yes there are women in the DJ game let me hip you to a thing or two! There are indeed many top female DJs out there but if there was a “Queen of the Decks” that title would have to be bestowed to UK artist DJ Rap. DJ Rap (AKA Charissa Saverio) has been in the DJ game for over a decade and has brought an aggressive female vibe to Jungle/Drum and Bass style electronic dance music. Her breakthrough CD “Learning Curve”, was released in 1999 to widespread critical acclaim and she has continued to release six more solo albums building on “Learning Curve”s success. This is one busy lady because in addition to her solo music and performance schedule she is a member of the DnB influenced band Metasyn. Metasyn’s latest single was released last month and I have to tell you I think it’s really hit on something new. Check it out here…

Adam K and Soha are one of the premiere remix artist teams out there. The list of hits they have disassembled and recreated is long. Some of my favorites include the oh so classic remixes of Kaskade’s “4AM”, and Benny Benassi’s “Come Fly Away”. These two seem to infuse a jazzy mellow vibe into the songs that is melodic but with enough punch to still groove to on the dance floor. Their latest and greatest remix is of the already classic “Loneliness” by Tomcraft. Check it out…

In terms of popularity there is no doubt that 2009 was a banner year for Kaskade whose increased visibility put him at the top of the list in many minds as one of the best out there in the EDM scene. Kaskade also toured a LOT (although he is overdue a stop here) and was all over the web promoting himself and his gigs. He is currently in the studio now working on his next album and I for one know I will be buying it day of release. In the meantime here is his latest track a remix of the song “So Far Away” (featuring Haley). Enjoy!

If you have been out to many nightclubs and lounges lately the you have been exposed to the bottle service phenomenon. The terms “bottle service”, “table service” or “booth reservations” all mean the same thing and I am here to tell you that for better or worse, (depending on your point of view) the service is here to stay (maybe). I am aware that there are some of you that are unfamiliar with what this service is so let me give you an adequate explanation. “Bottle service” is a “feature” of many clubs and lounges that enable patrons to buy their own bottle of liquor. This also includes glasses, the liquor on ice, and a variety of mixers. Typically cranberry juice, orange juice, Red Bull (or whatever you specify you’d like) and limes, lemons etc. (You can get a refill.) You also get a dedicated seating area with your own Server (or Host). He or she will serve up your first round of drinks and make sure you and your party are taken care of. Note that sometimes there is mandatory tip.

Now all this V.I.P. treatment will cost you, because there is usually a very high markup on the actual liquor. This means that the premium vodka you can by for $30 at a liquor store now is costing you up to ten times as much! In fact the bare minimum starting price on an off night is $100 a bottle, so ordering bottle service can get expensive fast! While the price is steep indeed, reserving bottle service has a number of advantages over just ordering drinks at the bar. Let me list a few:

1. No WAITING at the bar! I don’t really need to explain the advantage here but as you ALL know it can almost ruin a night to have the long breaks in the action.

2. You have a CENTRAL space where everyone in your party can regroup. This is a huge thing because how many times have you become separated from your friends or your group has split up and you do laps around the club/bar looking for each other! Ugggh! That is a great way to ruin a perfectly good night. Oh and guys if you want to make a good impression, what could be better than inviting that special lady to come chill with you at your table for a drink?

3. You and your party DO NOT have to wait in the long line to get in because bottle service guest are usually escorted in separately from everyone else. I have have to admit it is sweet indeed not to have to wait and worry IF you will get in.

To be fair there are some things about Bottle Service that can be a little bit of a hassle if things are not planned out in advance. For example, who’s credit card will be used for the reservation? How will the tab be divided at the end of the night? What if you are unsure that all your invited guests or friends will show up? If you don’t have a handle on any of those questions your big night at the table could be an even larger waste of money. One thing some people gripe about at the end of the night is the half empty bottle because you can’t take it with you (that is something to keep in mind if your group is small).

Now you might be wondering why did I qualify my earlier statement of bottle service being here to stay with a (maybe)? That’s because although clearly the service has it’s advantages, for some club/bar owners it’s a questionable practice. It just does not make sense for every establishment to try to offer this type of service because quite frankly some of them just don’t have the business to support it. It really makes a place seem dead when no one has reserved a table and all of those spaces are empty and roped off. If you don’t have the business to support it, why do it ? You run the risk of losing a potential regular customer who leaves your establishment after a couple of drinks because well, the place just SEEMED dead (we’re dealing with perceptions here folks).

If you and your group want a great night out then I highly recommend you reserve this service especially if it is for an event that you know will be packed. To reserve bottle service call ahead to the club and speak with a VIP host. Have fun and If you have a question or comment register and leave one below.
