I’m not going to to lie, I am a HUGE Calvin Harris fan! His second album “Ready for the Weekend” (2009) is one of my favorite albums of all time. Like any good fan I am eagerly awaiting his next album that is due to be released either later this year, or early next year (uggh). While we are waiting, Mr. Harris has been kind enough to release a couple of singles in advance of the new album. The first single “Awooga” is a straight instrumental dancefloor banger with an 8-bit vibe that gives it a very funky appeal (Check it out HERE). Now for the second single “Bounce” Calvin has teamed up with Kelis (who is way too underrated IMHO) on vocals. Her voice blends perfectly over Calvin’s trademark driving bassline and bleepy, blippy synth leads. “Bounce” picks up where “Ready for the Weekend” left off which is very nice. It’s like going back on vacation to that one special place after being away for a long time.

Afrojack, aka Nick van de Wall is a Dutch DJ from Spijkenisse who burst on to the dance music scene in 2007. Afrojack soon became considered as a genius producer and embarked on a series of collaborations with international artists such as David Guetta, Diplo, Kid Cudi, Laidback Luke and Steve Angelo to name but a few. He scored his first hit in 2008 with the track Drop down (do my dance) together with The Partysquad. After a much prolonged absence the Song of the Day has returned! Moving forward this blog will be dedicated to new music releases and some of my personal favorites (that might be a little older). With that being said, today’s song is a great blast from 2007/08 from Tunisian/Italian Producer Ben DJ. This instant classic features soulful vocals from Italian singer Sushy. There are more than a few artists that fly low under the radar. They might be known for remixing other peoples tracks or they’re just not a household name. In the case of Italian artist EDX both scenarios are true. EDX has been around for about a decade and has remixed a diverse group of artists including Deadmau5, Kool & The Gang, Lauryn Hill and Armin van Buuren. Now with this late ’09 release of “Shy, Shy”, EDX is stepping out of the shadows. It’s one of my favorites (I especially like the Paul Harris remix) and I think you might like it as well.

Yesterday’s song of the day was a massive new hit. Today I am feeling a bit more nostalgic, so it’s time for a Roger Sanchez classic. DJ and Producer Roger Sanchez is a veteran of the dance music scene. In 2003, Sanchez won his first Grammy Award for Best Remixed Recording for his remix of No Doubt’s “Hella Good” (a personal favorite). Today’s song is one near and dear to many house music fans around the world, and the video isn’t too shabby either. Check it out and if you are a member I’d love your comments.

There is no doubt if you have been out in the last few months you have heard and danced to this track. However I think it’s a safe bet that the majority of people in the clubs have no idea who certain artists are or even the name of the track, this post is dedicated to those folks.

Steve Aoki is probably best known for his remix work with artists like The Killers, Robin Thicke, Lenny Kravitz, and Duran Duran but he is also the man behind Dim Mak Records which launched acts like MSTRKRFT. Luke is a Dutch DJ and producer. He is definitely becoming quite a rising star and has risen to #27 in DJ Mag’s top 100 DJ List. He has worked with many other big names in the industry including David Guetta, Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso and Junior Sanchez and collaborates often with the Swedish House Mafia. Look for more from Laidback Luke who is definitely a rising star with notable sets at this year’s WMC.

Chicago’s DJ/Producer Steve Smooth is musical force to be reckoned with. The wait will soon be over! Today Kaskade has released the first single, the title track, it’s a gritty production, smoothed out by the vocals of Haley, known to KASKADE fans the world over as the ethereal singer of “I Remember” and “Move For Me.” Available digitally April 27 with a physical release May 11 via Ultra Records, “Dynasty” is the follow-up release to the massively successful “Strobelite Seduction”. To support the album, KASKADE is planning an extensive worldwide tour to last through the end of 2010. As of this blog post there is no date in St. Louis but (hopefully) that may change over the next few months.

If there is one thing that a lot of the artists featured on this blog have in common it’s that many have been at it for many years toiling away at the craft before gaining worldwide attention. Dennis Ferrer is definitely no exception. The House/Techno House producer has been around since the mid ’90s (back then as the artist Morph) and his list of remixes is loong, in fact he was recently nominated for a Grammy for his remix of Dido’s “Don’t Believe In Love”. Ferrer will definitely be a force to be reckoned with in terms of American DJ talent 2010 and beyond. If that wasn’t enough is new label Objektivity is gaining attention for signing acts as diverse as TMB (The Martinez Brothers) and Ane Brun.

Fedde Le Grand is one of those talents on the dance music scene whose name recognition or “brand” is huge but back catalog is small (but memorable). He burst onto the scene in 2004 with the seminal dance track ‘Put Your Hands Up 4 Detroit’. He has also remixed a ton of artists with much acclaim but it was his 2007 remix of ‘The Creeps’ by Camille Jones that had dance floors across America bangin (You can hear that track by clicking HERE). You will definitely be hearing more from Fedde Le Grand in 2010 so don’t be surprised.

Le grand released ‘Output” his first artist album late last year and one of the confirmed club bangers on that disc is the Rap/House mix ‘Back & Forth’. Take a listen…

OK St. Louis just in case there is anyone out there that doesn’t know that yes there are women in the DJ game let me hip you to a thing or two! There are indeed many top female DJs out there but if there was a “Queen of the Decks” that title would have to be bestowed to UK artist DJ Rap. DJ Rap (AKA Charissa Saverio) has been in the DJ game for over a decade and has brought an aggressive female vibe to Jungle/Drum and Bass style electronic dance music. Her breakthrough CD “Learning Curve”, was released in 1999 to widespread critical acclaim and she has continued to release six more solo albums building on “Learning Curve”s success. This is one busy lady because in addition to her solo music and performance schedule she is a member of the DnB influenced band Metasyn. Metasyn’s latest single was released last month and I have to tell you I think it’s really hit on something new. Check it out here…

Adam K and Soha are one of the premiere remix artist teams out there. The list of hits they have disassembled and recreated is long. Some of my favorites include the oh so classic remixes of Kaskade’s “4AM”, and Benny Benassi’s “Come Fly Away”. These two seem to infuse a jazzy mellow vibe into the songs that is melodic but with enough punch to still groove to on the dance floor. Their latest and greatest remix is of the already classic “Loneliness” by Tomcraft. Check it out…

Well a few weeks ago I wrote about some of the more vital songs of 2009. Well there was the glaring omission of the artist/DJ Kaskade (aka Ryan Raddon) whose 2008 album “Strobelight Seduction” was still pumping out a few hits well into 2009 so on a technicality I thought it was fair to leave him of the list. Some of you might think I don’t know what I am talking about because I could have mentioned his fantastic remix album “The Grand” which was released in ’09. That would be a fair criticism, but in my honest opinion while a good remix album for sure, the only really standout track was “Angel On My Shoulder (EDX`s Belo Horizonte At Night Remix)” and since that and most of the other tracks were reworkings of “Strobelight” cuts, I left it out of consideration as one of the best of 2009.

In terms of popularity there is no doubt that 2009 was a banner year for Kaskade whose increased visibility put him at the top of the list in many minds as one of the best out there in the EDM scene. Kaskade also toured a LOT (although he is overdue a stop here) and was all over the web promoting himself and his gigs. He is currently in the studio now working on his next album and I for one know I will be buying it day of release. In the meantime here is his latest track a remix of the song “So Far Away” (featuring Haley). Enjoy!

I couldn’t completely let 2009 fade away without bringing you one hot track you might have missed! This little Gem by English Electropop/Synthpop group La Roux, “Bulletproof” climbed all the way to the tops of the UK charts over the Summer of ’09. While the original track is actually quite good the Dave Aude remix is pure GENIUS! Take a listen and let me know what you think.

I have a confession to make…  I HATED David Guetta’s collaboration with Kelly Rowland upon my first listen in the Summer of 2009,  I mean I REALLY hated it.  But why did I have such a undeniably negative reaction to such an upbeat and danceable track that is sung so soulfully by Kelly Rowland?    Who knew she had that much oomph in her voice?  I had to check out to make sure Kelly hadn’t blown up to a Weather Girl like state to get that power.  Seriously, I guess it’s because with all the crap that was going on in 2009, that sugary sweet of a song was just, kind of tone deaf to what was happening in the news.  The song did however grow on me and by the end of 2009 I found myself singing along to the YEEAHAHs with the rest of the crowd.  That’s what makes for a good song, it wins you over.  Whats makes this a one of the best dance tracks of 2009 is that you shake your butt while you give in.

This was the hardest blog post I know I will write about the top Dance Music tracks for 2009 because how could I not include Calvin Harris? Well… How could I include Calvin Harris? There is something about Calvin Harris that is just perplexing… He is one part uber geek, one part genius musician, and one part rock star (in the old school “F You ” in your face tradition). In addition, his HIGHLY anticipated 2009 album “Ready for the Weekend” is one that I play in it’s entirety almost daily. However his first video for the first single from “Ready for the Weekend”, ‘I’m not Alone” is just so bad that it almost completely put me off on the track (yes it’s that bad folks). “I’m Not Alone” as infectious as it might be and it is, is also just not the best track off the album in my opinion. That honor goes to “You Used to Hold Me” and even though the single is just being released now, it’s already been crowned a hit and I have personally heard David Guetta and Dave Aude include it in their live DJ sets.

Early in 2009 I heard the dub of the Deadmau5 (aka Joel Zimmerman) track “Ghosts n Stuff”, it was like a lot of the music off his early ’09 release “It Sounds Like”… Just OK (One notable exception being “Faxing Berlin”). It was a bit disappointing as he was just coming off a huge collaboration with Kaskade on the track “Move for Me” (Another Best of 2009 Track for sure) and I was looking for more from the Mau. Flash forward to September and boy what a difference a few months can make. For the first single off “For Lack of a Better Name” (a compilation album) the Mau collaborates with Pendulum’s Rob Swire and adds the missing vocals to “Ghosts n Stuff”. Whoa! Play this track in a club and the crowd goes nuts, sing – a-long city! “Ghosts n Stuff” is definitely one of the best dance tracks of 2009.
