Since I was on a roll introducing you to some of the better known names on the electronic music scene I thought I would continue the streak with another top talent. Armin van Buuren hails from the Netherlands and is a dance music artist of international acclaim. He has been voted number one DJ in DJ Magazine’s Top 100 three times in the past and is in contention for the fourth nod this year. Although I am not big on following EDM categorizations I have to admit Armin’s style is definitely more “Trance” than most. This is a good thing because he produces tracks that are lush and melodic (not everything can be bump and grind). One of his best is ‘In and Out of Love’ off his 2008 album “Imagine”, a collaboration with Dutch mezzo-soprano Sharon den Adel. Take a listen…

Fedde Le Grand is one of those talents on the dance music scene whose name recognition or “brand” is huge but back catalog is small (but memorable). He burst onto the scene in 2004 with the seminal dance track ‘Put Your Hands Up 4 Detroit’. He has also remixed a ton of artists with much acclaim but it was his 2007 remix of ‘The Creeps’ by Camille Jones that had dance floors across America bangin (You can hear that track by clicking HERE). You will definitely be hearing more from Fedde Le Grand in 2010 so don’t be surprised.
Le grand released ‘Output” his first artist album late last year and one of the confirmed club bangers on that disc is the Rap/House mix ‘Back & Forth’. Take a listen…
If you read the Hear The Music blog about Bassnectar you know this is one show you don’t want to miss. If you need one more reason why you need to be there this weekend (April 3 at the Pageant) check out this hot off the decks remix of Nelly Furtado’s “Turn Out the Light”.
Some of you reading the title to today’s blog might be a little mystified… “Huh?” “The Pixies?” YES indeed this song is a favorite of mine from a long time ago and it’s funny how listening to it now you can kind of hear where some of today’s Alt. rock bands got some of their musical ideas (Kings of Leon “Use Somebody” perhaps?), anyway I digress…
Bassnector is someone who I have been following for a while now, I say someone because it is basically the project of one guy, musician Lorin Ashton. His music is hard to categorize and I bet you he would have it no other way. However if I had to try to describe it I would say that Ashton is definitely on to something. His mix of funky lo fi beats are driven by hard charging bass lines reminiscent of hip hop. On top of those beats is something decidedly different, a mix of electronic growls, noise, and vocal bits. As an introduction to his music I think this Pixies remix is perfect. You hear how he pays respect to the original but then lays his own style over it.
Bassnectar is the outsider on the Electronic music scene and if you read his hilarious WMC tweets you get the feeling he likes it that way. Keep your eyes on this one because there is going to be way more to come. Check out the track and if you like it you can download it for free from his website with the link below.
